Water Fasting

Recently, I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts, The Healthy Moms Podcast, and came across an episode that talked about water fasting.  As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I am familiar with fasting as it is something I do for religious purposes once a month. Water fasting was a  new term to me. I had never thought about fasting for health until listening to Dr Daniel Pompa on this podcast. Down the rabbit hole I went and for weeks studied and read about short and long-term water fasting. Here is some of the interesting information I found out about water fasting.

What is water fasting?

Well to put it simply, water fasting it a type of fasting in which a person only consumes water. These fasts may last a few hours or a few days.

Reasons to Fast:

 Insulin Control

Fasting is the very best way to control insulin and glucose.  All foods raise insulin so the most effective way to reduce insulin is to avoid food. Regular fasting, in addition to lowering insulin, has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity.

While in a fasting state, the body will switch over to autophagy. Autophagy  of ‘self-eating’ is a process by which the body removes cellular debris. When you have abnormal cells in your body,  they are unable to adapt in a fasting state and your body actually eats the abnormal cells. There are studies in which fasting has actually shrunk tumors and erased skin tags. These results are usually seen in fasts that last longer then four days.

Hormone Sensitivity

Hormone sensitivity also occurs during a fast. During a fast, as your body cleans itself, it helps your hormones become more receptive.

Weight Loss

Intermittent fasting as well as long water fasts have proven to help your body become a fat burner instead of a sugar burner. Many studies are showing intermittent fasting is a great way to lose weight.

Human Growth Hormone.

Human Growth Hormone or HCH is a hormone that  stimulates cell growth and regeneration. HGH levels skyrocket during a fast. HCH can help with weight loss as well as muscle gain.

Other Reasons to Fast

  1. Stimulates brain function (bye-bye brain fog)
  2. Detoxifies the body
  3. Improves longevity
  4. Boosts the immune system
  5. Rejuvenate skin

Water fasting is something I have decided to incorporate into my own life. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease three years ago, I have been looking for ways to help improve my thyroid function as well as heal my body over all. I actually just finished a four-day water fast! I will tell you guys all about it in a post tomorrow!

  1. haylee! This is Darci (Racker) Timothy! I just happened upon your blog because the company I work for had your name as a potential influencer for our products. So fun to see your face and then come across this post which is exactly what I have been experimenting with the past few weeks. Now I want your followup post!!! I’ve really enjoyed intermittent fasting and have noticed a huge drop in my cravings. I love that I don’t have to do it all the time, but most days I do a 16-18 hour fast.
Anyways, so fun to connect again. You are as cute as ever!
