What Exactly is The Keto Diet?

You have probably heard of the keto diet or eating keto recently but you may be wondering “What exactly is the keto diet?” The ketogenic diet, which is often referred to as the keto diet, is a low carb, high fat diet. Eating a diet high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbs puts your body into a state of ketosis. When your body is in ketosis, it is burning fat for fuel which results in weight loss.

What Can You Eat on the Keto Diet?

There are so many things you can eat on the keto diet that it really doesn’t feel like a diet at all… Okay, maybe for the first two weeks it does feel like you are on a diet but after that, your carb cravings go away and it really is such an easy plan to stick to. So what exactly should you eat on the keto diet?

Protein

You can eat beef, chicken, turkey, seafood and eggs as your protein sources.

Dairy

Most dairy is acceptable to eat on the keto diet, just watch the carb content. Good dairy choices are butter, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, goat cheese, mozzarella cheese and heavy cream.

Vegetables

Good choices for picking vegetables while eating keto are any green leaf vegetables, cucumbers, green beans, mushrooms, squash, tomatoes and zucchini. Stay away from starchy vegetables like potatoes and yams.

Oils & Fats

This category is important as you will need healthy sources of fats in your diet every day. Some of my favorites are butter or ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil and MTC oil.

Nuts & Seeds

I really missed chips when I first started the ketogenic diet. I am not going to even lie about it, I missed them so much!! The salt, the crunch… it was the absolute hardest thing I had to give up! Adding nuts and seeds to my diet really helped when I got the craving for a salty potato chip! All types of nuts are approved on this diet! Almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds.. just to name a few!

What Foods Should You Stay Away From?

Do not eat foods high in carbs or sugar. If you eat a lot of carbs, it will kick your body right out of ketosis and your weigh loss will stall. No breads, bagels, cupcakes, chips, tortillas, pizza. Regular soda, ice cream, high carb coffee drinks and smoothies are also not to be eaten.

What Should Your Macros Be While On The Ketogenic Diet?

Getting the right amount of each macronutrient is very important and will directly effect the success of your diet. Your aim everyday should be to eat 70% Fats, 25% Protein and 5% Carbohydrates. I can not say this enough, get a macro calculator and track your macros! I recommend using the My Fitness Pal App. It makes tracking your macros so quick and easy.

Fats- 70% * Protein- 24% *Carbohydrates- 5%

I have been on the ketogenic diet for the last four months and I can say I have never felt better in my life. I have lost 40 pounds. My hair and nails are healthy and shiny. My skin is clearer then it has ever been in my life and I have finally won my battle with adult acne! I have only good things to say about eating keto. I actually took my body out of ketosis for a few weeks and was shocked at the side effects that I went through!
